You’ve just got home from the most talked about the festival of the year. After sleeping for about 3 days straight, you may be considering removing your wristband.  After a few strong tugs - you find yourself saying ‘how can I remove my festival wristband without cutting it?’ Festival wristbands are designed to be tamper proof - this is completely intentional.

Those colourful, friendly-looking fabric or vinyl wristbands seem almost indestructible and festival organisers have a great reason for making them so strong.

Festival wristbands are a crucial part of ensuring the safety and security of both festival-goers and event staff. As such, they’re specifically designed to withstand high levels of wear and tear, as well as incorporate strong tamper-proof locking mechanisms so that once they're attached, they cannot be easily removed or transferred.

There are three main reasons for this:

Why are festival wristbands hard to loosen or take off?

To prevent illegal access control

Festival wristbands help organisers to control who goes in and out of an event complex, prevent the sale of counterfeit tickets as well as ensure that everyone inside the festival grounds has paid for their entry. It’s common for attendees to try and remove the wristband so that they can pass it to a mate on the outside who is ready and waiting to illegally access the festival! More on this later.

To easily identify individuals

The wristbands serve as a physical marker to show that a person has paid for entry and has permission to be inside the festival grounds - so it’s important that they stay on at all times. By providing festival-goers with wristbands, organisers can easily spot who belongs in the event and who does not. They’re also able to quickly distinguish between staff and event attendees and act accordingly in a security situation.

In addition to being a visual identifier, festival wristbands may also contain unique identifying information, such as a barcode or RFID chip. This technology allows organisers to track attendance, control access to specific areas, and even personalise the festival experience for individual attendees. This again means that wristbands need to be strong and robust to allow for the technology to work accurately.

Finally, some festivals may also use different colours or designs for different types of wristbands, such as VIP or artist wristbands, to further distinguish between attendees.

Endurance

Festivals can be long, hot, and physically demanding - and that’s just for staff! Depending on the type of event, you may need to plan for attendees to participate in constant dancing, moshing, or other physically strenuous events. Wristbands need to be able to withstand these conditions without breaking or falling off, which is why they are made to be strong and difficult to remove.

The collectable factor

Are you a collector? For many festival-goers, collecting and accumulating wristbands is a way to remember the events you’ve attended. They make for a great conversation starter amongst other attendees. By making them strong and durable, organisers can create a keepsake that will last long after the festival is over.

But can festival wristbands be loosened?

This depends on the material. ID&C wristbands are designed to resist loosening.  Each wristband has varied features, but all are intended for use across the duration of your event without becoming loose, damaged or frayed in any weather conditions. Are people actually sharing wristbands?

Yes they are! There have been studies and reports of festival attendees attempting to remove wristbands and give them to others. This is often done to allow friends to enter the festival without paying for a ticket.

One study conducted by the University of Alberta in 2017 found that festival attendees were likely to share wristbands with others, and some even had a strategy for removing and reapplying them without damaging the band.

In addition, festival organisers have reported instances of attendees trying to remove and transfer wristbands. As a result, many festivals have implemented measures such as using tamper-proof wristbands or adding security features to prevent the unauthorised transfer of wristbands.

It is important to note that attempting to remove and transfer wristbands is not only a violation of festival rules but is also illegal in many jurisdictions. So, next time you find yourself struggling to remove your festival wristband, just remember that it's all for a good cause!
