When planning a specific event it’s important to know how long each type of wristband will last so that they’re fit for purpose. Like anything, a multitude of factors are going to determine this such as the materials used, quality of build, and general use and care. What’s more, the factors are going to be dependent on the type of wristband, with many types available today.

So let’s run you through the types of wristbands and then determine how long they’ll last.

How Long do Silicone Wristbands Last?

Arguably the most popular type of wristband, these are made of flexible silicon rubber. Popular in event management and fundraising, this type of wristband is very comfortable to wear and is also waterproof. They’re rather customisable also, with the ability to be debossed, embossed, printed, and also glow-in-the-dark – making them perfect for fundraising and sports events.

As wristbands go they’re very long-lasting, with the ability to last anywhere from several months to several years. These come down to some key factors with silicone wristbands:

Quality: the higher the quality of silicone, the longer it’ll last. 100% silicone will always last longer compared to those made of lower-quality materials.

Environmental: Depending on the usage things like extreme temperatures, chemicals, and sunlight exposure will all play a role in that several months to several years gap. The more prolonged to these elements the wristband is, the faster it will deteriorate.

Usage: They’re not commonly used for a single or weekend event. In fact, it may be a daily rigorous sporting activity in which you use this type of wristband. The amount it's used and the frequency will mean more wear and tear compared to the occasional usage or single usage bands.  You can see our high-quality silicone wristbands here.

How Long Do Tyvek Wristbands Last?

Made of Tyvek material (paper), these wristbands are very lightweight and are mostly used for more short-term events like concerts and festivals (see our festival wristbands here). Some key components include their tear-resistance and adhesive strip for secure closure of the wristband.

Known for durability and short-term sustainable use, it’s common for these wristbands to last for the duration of the event or day they are used.  These are some of the factors why:

Adhesive strength: adhesive is used to secure the closure of the wristband when put around a person’s wrist. The adhesive used can obviously vary in quality. This will play a big factor in how long this type of wristband will last. The higher the quality of the adhesive, the better the adhesion and how well it will keep the wristband in place for the duration of that event.

Environmental: These types of wristbands are water-resistant, but not waterproof. Things like heavy rain and a lot of moisture will cause the wristband to not last as long as if these factors weren’t in play. Weather is going to play a big role in how fast Tyvek wristbands will degrade.

Wear and Tear: The materials used to create these wristbands are woven spun high-density polyethene. Whilst it’s strong and durable, it is susceptible to wear and tear. Things like friction and excessive stretching are going to impact how long they’ll last.Browse our tyvek wristbands here.

How Long Do Fabric Wristbands Last?

Fabric wristbands are typically used for events held over various days, and they’ll more often than not have a sliding or plastic locking mechanism for the closing of the wristband. These bands are usually made of polyester and nylon.

In terms of long-lasting ability, they’re usually better than that of Tyvek wristbands and with real care, and can last a lot longer. They’re able to last several months to years, again it’s going to depend on factors such as:

Quality of fabric: Higher-quality fabrics like woven or polyester are going to last a lot longer than cheap alternatives. They’ll show far more resilience and can withstand the extended use desired at multi-day events.

Maintenance: It’s key to stay away from any chemicals and bleaches if the fabric wristband is going to last longer than just a month or so. Regular cleaning to remove dirt and maintain the appearance will play a role along with gentle washing if they become soiled for any reason at the event.

Handling: Outside of general environmental factors which can be attributed to all wristbands, if worn often and exposed to a lot of activity, the long-lasting ability of fabric wristbands will succumb to general wear and tear.

Quality of the locking mechanism: The build of locking mechanism used to clasp the wristband will play a role in the longetivey. Our wristbands locks are designed to prevent event attendees from removing the wristband to give to others. The stronger and more tamper resistant the lock, the longer it will last. See your fabric wristband options here.

How Long Do Vinyl Wristbands Last?

Mainly used to protect against the harsh exposure of water, you’ll find vinyl wristbands are used commonly at water parks, swimming pools or events that get a bit wet!

Such wristbands are made of durable plastic material making them waterproof and they’re more secure than Tyvek wristbands.

They’re able to sustain long-term use of around two weeks. They’re water-proof and fade-resistant, being very comfortable to wear with minimal skin agitation. You can see our vinyl wristbands here.

How Long Do RFID Wristbands Last?

Firstly, what are RFID wristbands?

(RFID) - or Radio Frequency Identification - wristbands are embedded with a chip for contactless ID’ing and tracking. This modern-day wristband used in access control and cashless payments systems. RFID wristband materials can range from silicone, fabric, or vinyl - all of which we have covered above.

Typically they’ll last a few months to a year. Due to the nature of having a chip embedded, the wristband might not outlast the chip itself. But like all of the above, the lifespan of an RFID wristband is largely going to come down to environmental exposure, be it harsh conditions or even excessive bending from the user.

Wristbands can last short-term to long-term depending on the material in question, meaning the variety available is key depending on the event in which they’ll be used.

Common factors that will affect this include environmental exposure and general care. Follow any specific care plans or instructions from the manufacturers to give the wristband as long a life as possible.
